Enrique Climent was considered as one of the foremost exponents of the Spanish avant-garde art movements from the first half of the twentieth century. Together with other young Spanish artists of the period, he had absorbed innovative influences of the French school and contributed to the establishment in Madrid of the so-called ‘School of Vallecas’, renowned for its surrealist and metaphysical directions. Feted during his lifetime, and having represented Spanish contemporary art on the international stage, Climent was forced to flee Spain in 1939 following the establishment of the Francoist government. After settling in Mexico, Climent had continued painting prolifically. Major posthumous exhibitions of Climent’s works in Mexico continue reinvigorating curatorial appreciation and collectors’ following of his works. The present work, dating from the artist’s Mexican period, demonstrates Climent’s ongoing experimentation and engagement with modern and contemporary art movements. The bouquet of native flowers has been abstracted to create a pattern reminiscent of Mexican traditional motifs. The dominant blues and muted ochres complement each other, bringing the composition forth from the neutrally abstracted background. The etching is notable for its textural qualities, volume, dimensionality, and deep reliefs. Acquired in the 1970s, and kept in a pristine condition, this rare to the market print is a must-have for emerging and established connoisseurs of international art and print collecting.
