Adam Cullen's visual language is unhierarchical. A mish-mash of the personal, profane, real and mythical, he attacks contemporary culture head-on, without reprieve. In this expansive painting, he courts crassness, stereotypes and humour. An assault to the senses, Cullen's work is grunge to the fullest extent.
Expansive and quintessentially Cullen, 'Why We Live in Groups' was published in Ken McGregor's monograph of the artist beside the quote "...people aren't used to associating low things with high art", pictured above.
Sometimes controversial, but always raucously clever, Cullen's work is represented in many state collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria and continues to be avidly collected. He 2001 we won the Archibald Prize.
