Elizabeth Durack is one of Australia’s most loved artists. Piccaninny Day depicts 24 separate incidents in ‘A Day in the Life of ...’ young Aboriginal children (Chunuma and Dingyerrie) who were personally known to the artist. Originally created on a 39 x 1600cm paper scroll this pen, ink and gouache work encapsulates Durack’s distinctive early style. Piccaninny Day precedes the popular Mary and Elizabeth Durack publication: Piccaninnies (Offset Printing, Sydney, 1940).
