Pasquale Giardino rose to prominence as a founding member of Melbourne's Roar collective. Based in Fitzroy in the 1980s, this aptly titled group set about dismantling the status quo of art. In his role, Giardino giddily elevates the banal - producing devil-may care scenes that pop with colour, humour and unexpected references.
In this work, he distills the inhabitants of a gum tree with flat, bold style. Reminiscent of Keith Haring, Giardino is impactful with minimal effort - making memorable characters out of simple strokes. Currently, he is represented at the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, and many regional and state collections.
