Mary Hammond explores the experience of everyday women with wit and grace. In this series of four works, she catches women as they go about town, unaware they are the subject of fine art. As a wife and mother, Hammond is fascinated by women like these, whose rich inner lives are too often excluded from the public imagination.
A highly respected artist, Hammond is represented in public collections including the War Memorial, Canberra, the State Library of Victoria, Artbank and the City of Melbourne. She emerged along Vic O’Connor, Noel Counihan and Jim Wigley, sharing in their belief that art can be a tool for social reform. For collectors of female artists, portraiture and Realist art, ‘Prahran’ promises a distinct, enriching, Melbourne perspective.
