Since his arrival in Australia, the Scottish-born Euan Heng has become one of the country’s most beloved artists, printmakers, and teachers. His iconography of simple shapes and a refined palette has garnered a faithful following among collectors and curators. Today, his works grace the walls of numerous national, state, regional and tertiary galleries throughout Australia as well as notable corporate and private collections in Australia and abroad.

This work showcases Heng’s prowess as a printmaker. His style and monochromatic palette is suited perfectly to the medium of linocut. Despite the work’s simplicity however, there lies a psychological intensity. With expressions of anger and absence, the subjects of ‘Prelude to the Dance’ are perhaps unwilling participants in a dance of missed connection.

At once aesthetically compelling and emotionally rich, ‘Prelude to the Dance’ testifies to Heng’s attunement to the human condition, as well as art making itself. This work would be an ideal addition for collections of Australian contemporary art and prints.
