In an essay on the artist, Gillian Serisier wrote: “The work of Anwen Keeling is defined by feminine beauty. It is a world of soft tones, gentle curves and reposed thought. Light plays across a form as a liquid element caressing and defining its own trajectory insensible to pattern and mood. The Keeling figure is enigmatic, invested in personal cognition. The viewer is cast within the narrative as voyeur. There is something of Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth in this paradox of broken narrative.”

Anwen Keeling has been exhibiting regularly since the early 2000s. She had won the ABN AMRO Emerging Artist Award in 2004, and was a finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize (2004) and in the Sulman Prize (2010-11). A professional portrait painter, she has received commissions from leading tertiary institutions, and her works have been acquired by regional, municipal, corporate and notable private collections across Australia and abroad. The artist is currently represented by Liverpool Street Gallery in Sydney.

The present painting is distinguished by warm, muted tonalities of reds and pinks, and the sophisticated management of light as it filters through the lace curtains, and plays delicately on the model’s skin.

Works by Anwen Keeling would make a sophisticated addition to aficionados of contemporary painting and to any admirers of the female form in art.
