Franz Kempf is a renowned artist and printmaker. His work reflects a deep involvement with Judaism, as well as a postmodern aesthetic. He is whole-heartedly a humanist, creating work that as art critic Sasha Grishin has written “commemorates the miracle of being and condemns all that is oppressive and coercive”.

‘To the Sea’ speaks to Kempf’s harmonising of constancy and flux. It is where land meets sea, both swept in movement and sand. The organic yet abstracted, an expression of the infinite moods, stimuli and ideas that constitute the ocean.

Kempf is represented at the National Gallery of Australia. Posthumously, a printmaking prize was erected in his honour. For collectors of important works on paper and humanistic art, ‘To the Sea’ is a wondrous find.
