Known for his irreverent and exuberant style, David Larwill made his artistic debut as a founding member of Roar Studios. Among Melbournes earliest artist-run-initiatives, this studio pioneered raw, primitive and intuitive art – acting as a proverbial roar against the art establishment.
In ‘Study for ‘The Story Teller’’, Larwill’s artistic process unfurls. Despite the appearance of spontaneity, this is the result of a considered mind. Featuring birds, fish, insects and humans, Larwill constructs a story in unhinged parts. There is something akin to a child’s imagination at work, where one could swear a cast shadow is a dinosaur. Youthful yet cool, harmonic and purposefully idiosyncratic, ‘Study for ‘The Story Teller’ is open to interpretations.
Larwill's work is represented in most regional and state collections including at the National Gallery of Victoria and National Gallery of Australia. This is an energetic image by one of Australias foremost artists, whose vision for art and life continues to resonant with our inner rebel. For collectors of black and white imagery and fans of Larwill and expressionism, continue your own story with ‘Study for ‘The Story Teller’’.
