Philippe Le Miere’s ‘after Jean-Michel Basquiat One Eyed Man Xerox Face Pablo Picasso Femme assise près dune fenêtre Marie-Thérèse is a fusion of two paintings, both named in the work’s title. These works - created fifty years apart - recently made gains at auction, with Basquiat’s ‘One Eyed Man or Xerox Face’ selling for $30.2 million USD and Picasso’s ‘Femme assise près dune fenêtre Marie-Thérèse earning $103.4 million USD.
Le Miere learned of the sales online, where they were reported with the same cool detachment as a tennis commentator. Nothing was said about their aesthetic content which, if their fiscal value is any indication, is surely masterful. Rather, the Basquiat was constellated in data: bidding, starting at $15.5 million USD, climbed to $26 million in ten minutes; it was originally bought in 1987 for $23,100 USD, its performance bolstered by two recent Basquiat sales topping $50 million USD. The Picasso was discussed in similar terms bar one deviation. The reporter noted that the sense of communal relief and optimism that usually proceeds a sale like this was absent: the auction occurred online.
In his work, Le Miere evokes the strange happenings of the art world. At the dizzying ends of postmodernism a painting is reduced to data, traded between screen-names for an island’s GDP. Even the human element of the spectacle - the audience, applauding the diversification of assets - is absent. Under his painterly hand, ‘One Eyed Man or Xerox Face’ and ‘Femme assise près dune fenêtre Marie-Thérèse’ are obfuscated, subsumed, fused and glitched. They are made in the eye of the algorithm.
For collectors of pop art and abstract-expressionism, take in the bright lights of ‘after Jean-Michel Basquiat One Eyed Man Xerox Face Pablo Picasso Femme assise près dune fenêtre Marie-Thérèse.
