Sam Leach 'The Lift'

Regular price $16,000.00

This exquisitely executed major oil painting by celebrated contemporary artist Sam Leach was exhibited in Melbourne at Nellie Castan Gallery in 2010, the same year as Leach won both the 2010 Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize for his superb portrait of Tim Minchin and his controversial Wynne Prize for Proposal for Landscaped Cosmos. Leach has long taken animals as his subject matter. In an interview with Andrew Frost, Leach explains his reasons. Employing animals as human metaphors he’s hoping to develop empathy while simultaneously pushing to depict each animal “on its own terms”. Author Tim Winton terms ‘an iconography of disquiet in Sam Leach’s virtuosic oil paintings. It canvasses the artist’s uncanny thematic conflations of nature and culture as well combined with his stylistic photorealist representation. An extremely desirable piece of fine contemporary art by one of Australias strongest and most fascinating artists.
