Joan Lindsay 'Lillies' - SOLD

Regular price $6,500.00

Joan Lindsay's version of the Australian gothic was unique. Through her written and painted work, she infused the ethereal, feminine and transient to produce an aesthetic as haunting, as it is intoxicating. Best known for her enigmatic novel Picnic at Hanging Rock, Lady Joan Lindsay was also a gifted artist. In Lillies, swirling flowers coil under an imaginary sun, evoking the Saṃsāra, or cycle of life. Painted two years before Picnic at Hanging Rock was conceived, this work testifies to Joan Lindsay's spectral view of reality and time. In her youth, Joan Lindsay studied painting under Frederick McCubbin. Before she was recognised however, she married Daryl Lindsay - the eventual director of the National Gallery of Victoria. Post wedding, he discouraged his wife's art, urging her instead, to write and garden. This reluctance to recognise a woman's artistry was not unique to Sir Lindsay but instead, part of a pervasive patriarchal attitude that only in the light of history can be rightfully redressed. Under fresh eyes however, Joan Lindsay’s command over the canvas is clear. Lillies is not only a bewitching painting, it is rich with story, history and persisting cultural significance. Large, impressive and epitomising Lady Joan Lindsay's style, it is also exceedingly rare - making this opportunity, as seldom as it is special. Read more about this significant female artist here
