Based in Horsham, Western Victoria, Evan Mackley was a renaissance man. He collected everything from motorcycle parts to bank notes, coins and stamps, was the proprietor of a successful restaurant, gallery and antiques shop and even played a big drum in a kilt.
In 1990 Mackley started painting, fast earning a following for his sumptuous, naive-expressionist works. In ‘Springtime in Pippity Poppitys Garden he paints a field of flowers. Appearing in all colours and shapes, these blooms are visual hors doeuvres.
Like fellow outsider artist Pro Hart, Mackley speaks to the often overlooked rural experience. He is self-taught, reared on farmland and untethered from the city’s aesthetic preoccupations. In an obituary, Bill Ower described Mackley as a unique character, “with imagination and eccentricities” and who does things his own way.
For collectors of naive-expressionism, rural Australian art and admirers of the underdog, ‘Springtime in Pippity Poppitys Garden’ is an inspired find.
