Lewis Miller is one of Australia’s most outstanding figurative painters and graphic artists, specialising in the genres of portraiture, still life, and the female nude.
The present memento mori of a skull is a recurring subject within Miller’s still life studies. It is partially a homage to the Old and Modern Masters, who have had a significant influence of the artist’s works. It is also an ongoing rumination on the artist’s experiences in the Middle East, where he was sent as Australia’s Official War Artist in 2003, and which had resulted in a significant body of work for the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The fluidity of the line and mastery of the chiaroscuro demonstrate Miller’s prowess in the medium of lithography.
Millers win of the prestigious Archibald Prize in 1998 with the portrait of fellow artist, Allan Mitelman, and of the Ramsey and Farrell self-portrait awards in 1981 and 2007 respectively, have solidified his reputation as one of the country’s most respected portrait painters. His works have been acquired by the National Portrait Gallery, Australia’s major national and state collections, regional and tertiary institutions, as well as significant corporate and private collections throughout Australia and abroad.
