This humorous double-portrait of the artist with Allan Mitelman, the subject of Miller’s 1998 Archibald Prize winning portrait, is a record of a lasting friendship between the two artists, and of the passionate discussions about the arts, sport, politics and life in general in which the two artists engage over a cup of coffee in one of their favourite St Kilda joints.
The laconicity of line and the complexity of background cross-hatchings demonstrate Miller’s mastery of etching medium.
Lewis Miller is one of Australia’s most outstanding figurative painters and graphic artists, specialising in the genres of portraiture, still life, and the female nude. His win of the prestigious Archibald Prize in 1998 with the portrait of fellow artist, Allan Mitelman, and of the Ramsey and Farrell self-portrait awards in 1981 and 2007 respectively, have solidified his reputation as one of the country’s most respected portrait painters. Miller’s works have been acquired by the National Portrait Gallery, Australia’s major national and state collections, regional and tertiary institutions, as well as significant corporate and private collections throughout Australia and abroad.
