What makes this work blue, is its medium. A cyanotype, 'Kwie-Li's Fans' was produced via an ultraviolet photographic process that stems from the 20th century. The process was conceived as a low-cost way to reproduce drawings, thus the blueprint was born.

Julie Millowick's interest in the cyanotype was inspired by Anna Atkins (1825 - 1871). An English botanist and photographer, Atkins is considered by some the first female photographer and the first person to publish a book illustrated with photographic images.

An esteemed photographer, Millowick's work is steeped in a deep understanding of the technical, aesthetic and historic nature of photography. She has exhibited widely and is represented in public institutions including the National Gallery of Victoria. This poetic and unexpected work will suit collections of print, photography and minimal art. It's elegant blue, diced by delicate fans is not only beautiful, but reaches deep into history.
