Mirka Mora was a beating heart of Australia’s cultural life. Born in France to European Jewish parents, she immigrated to Australian in 1951 after narrowly avoiding Auschwitz. In Melbourne, she befriended John and Sunday Reed, sidling into their enclave of artists, writers and creatives.

Mora’s work is populated by big-eyed characters: angels, humans, birds and animals. They are informed by folklore, Eastern European fairy tales, angels and ancient mythology, as well as Mora’s experiences of the Holocaust. She once connected her cherubic characters to the memory of seeing children crammed onto a train headed to a concentration camp. “Yes, the truth you have to remember… You have to speak for the dead, don’t you? You have to and I’m a witness and I’m a lucky escape”.

‘Untitled (Symbiosis)' is quintessential Mora. It stars a fantastical character emerging from shadows, overlain by delicate gold squiggles. The figure bears four legs – perhaps she is joined at the hip with her soulmate?

Despite her harrowing upbringing, Mora was unfailingly optimistic. Love, hope and light suffuse her imagery not in spite of knowing tragedy, but because of it. This fused cherub is an angel on earth – a reminder that joy exists only in contrast to hardship. If life necessitates pain, the salve is to carve out beauty.

For collectors of modern art, works on paper and admirers of Mora’s infectious joie de vivre, ‘Untitled (Symbiosis)’ is a profoundly special find. Let it be the angel on your shoulder.
