Vic O’Connor believed art and life ought not be separated. His vision was distinctly political, aiming to throw light on the injustices of modern life. An important figure of Melbourne’s Social Realist movement - which included Noel Counnihan and Yosl Bergner - O’Connors work is marked by a keen sensitivity to the plight of poor people, as well as a deep cynicism towards war.
This impactful linoprint teems with atmosphere, testifying to the artist’s unfailing passion. O’Connor is represented in several public collections including the National Gallery of Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria. His contributions to Australian art history are as distinct as they are intriguing.
This linocut will enhance collections of social realist, landscape and political art.
