Reproduction print of the work of art by beloved Australian artist John Olsen titled 'Five Bells'. The painting was inspired by Olsen’s favourite poem by Kenneth Slessor titled ‘Salute to five Bells’. The poem tells the tragic story of the poet's mate Jo Lynch, as a group of friends cross the bay on a ferry to a party in Mosman. Jo, with his pockets stuffed with bottles of beer, was flung over the edge of the boat when a big shipped passed. Weighted down by the beer bottles he sank to the bottom of the ocean. His body was never found.
Inspired by this poem, Olsen created a marvelous painting, commissioned as a large mural for the Sydney Opera house. In it he illustrates the moonlight and water of the Sydney Harbour on the night of a true Australian tragedy.
