Sonia Payes is a Melbourne-based multi-disciplinary artist, renowned for her innovative approaches to photography, sculpture, moving image, animation, new media, 3-D printing, and conceptual installation works. She has been exhibiting regularly since the early 2000s, and has won the 2014 McClelland Achievement Prize and the 2019 NOW Prize. Regular participant in major curated photography and sculpture surveys, her works have been acquired by numerous public galleries in Australia and prestigious private collections in Australia, Shanghai, Beijing, Switzerland and Belgium.

Sonia Payes is currently represented by Scott Livesey Galleries in Melbourne.

The present work comes from a series of images taken during Sydney’s Mardi Gras Parade. Demonstrating the artist’s background in documentary and reportage photography, Payes captures an image that is at once descriptive and iconic, conveying eye-witness experiences at the celebrated and groundbreaking LGBTQ+ event. Payes’s works from these series are an important addition to collectors of contemporary photography and social history.
