John Peart is one of Australia’s foremost abstract artists. Inspired by the landscape, his works are meditative, carved out over time with a mindset that privileges process over perfection. In 1968 Art historian Daniel Thomas described Peart’s work in musical terms:
“Rhythm, resonance, echo, flow, continuity… It does not all happen within the canvas. His pictures expand. They claim the space that surrounds them and the time beyond the moment when the spectator sees them.”
‘Mantrascape IV’ testifies to Peart’s singularity. It sees an arrangement of shapes cascade down the canvas, each its own muted shade of the rainbow. Like its name suggests, this work is a visual mantra – a resonant repeated until the viewer feels centred, engaged and at peace. Rather than mountain peaks or seascapes, Peart’s looks to our internal landscapes.
Peart is represented in public collections across Australia. He was included in the seminal 1968 exhibition ‘The Field’ at the National Gallery of Victoria, in 1997 he won the Wynne Prize, in 2000 he won the Sulman Prize and was an Archibald finalist in 1998. For collectors of important abstract art or those seeking a new mantra, ‘Mantrascape IV’ is the work for you.
