Hungarian artist Margit Pogany is one of the most famous muses of the twentieth century. She inspired her lover, Constantin Brancusi to spend twenty years creating nineteen different versions of his sculpture entitled Mademoiselle Pogany. Like a real-life iteration of Pygmalion - the Ancient Greek myth whereby an artist falls in love with the sculpture he crafts, the story of Pogany and Brancusi charts the entwinement of love, art and creation.
An artist in her own right, she met Brancusi in Paris in 1909. Two world wars intervened and in 1948 Pogany emigrated to Australia and lived in Camberwell Victoria until her passing in 1964. Her paintings are in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Victoria. This original oil painting of two trees is an intriguing portal into the artistic lives, loves and history of two hugely significant figures in twentieth century modern art, making it a true collector's piece.
