Fanny Rabel was a Polish-born Mexican artist who is considered to be the first modern female muralist and one of the youngest associated with the Mexican muralist tradition. She was also the only female member of “Los Fridos” a group of students taught by Frida Kahlo. Rabel was founding member of the Salon de la Plastica Mexicana and the Taller de la Grafica Popular in 1950. In 1993 the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes honoured the artist with an extensive survey exhibition. Apart from large-scale sight-specific murals which grace numerous public buildings throughout Mexico, her works have been acquired by prominent public, corporate and private collections across the globe.
Image of the child was central to Rabel’s art. In the present work, Maternidad [Motherhood], the artist creates an exemplary image of universal appeal. The mother’s inclined head and the hands protectively clasping the infant, and the child’s upward gaze and outstretched arm convey introspective intimacy and unconditional love. The cross-hatching techniques to create form and shadow, and the delicate application of vary-coloured tints, uphold Ravel’s reputation as a respected master printmaker.
Acquired in the 1970s, and kept in a pristine condition, this rare to the market print is a must-have for emerging and established connoisseurs of international art and print collecting.
