This work forms part of David Rankin’s series on scenes, faces and stories from the Holocaust. It hopes to give a human or tangible cadence to an otherwise unimaginable event – an event which hits close to home, with Rankin’s wife, Lily Brett, being the descendent of Holocaust survivors.

In the words of New York art critic Dore Ashton, Rankin “is an exceptionally intellectual artist who is extremely alert to many currents in the history of art, philosophy and literature”.

A foremost figure in Australian art, Rankin’s work can be found in the collections of most Australian State Galleries, as well as many private and international collections. For collectors of Jewish art and prints, this work is a special find.
