Steve Rosendale is fascinated by close observation of the everyday and of the recent past. In his search for inspiration, he turns frequently to the popular culture of the 1960s and 1970s, and especially the way it is captured in Hollywood movies of the era.Slipstream is based on a still from The French Connection, the 1971 Academy Award winning action thriller starring Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider. The painting features such inimitable aspects of Rosendale’s oeuvre as the compositional coherence, overall colour balance, and a close cropping of the image to convey a sense of movement and energy. Rosendale’s adherence to the hyper-realistic genre is demonstrated by the sharpened focus and attention to detail. The painting demonstrates the reasons for the artist’s popularity, enduring profile, and the increasing collector following. The artist has been exhibiting regularly since the early 2000s in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, and his works were included in curated exhibitions throughout Australia. He was a finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, and his works grace the walls of notable corporate and private collections in Australia and overseas. Paintings by Steve Rosendale are a sophisticated addition to both emerging and established collections of contemporary international art.
