Garry Shead's work often deals with classical themes. From the ageless muse to Greek mythology, he interrogates and celebrates the stories that have long since transfixed Western civilization.

In Poet, he pictures a muse surrounded by inspiration. The peaks of Olympus overlook, a bound hand reaches and flowers bloom. Shead invites the viewer to make sense of these symbols, creating their own myth.

Collected by all public institutions, Shead has won the Archibald and Dobell prizes. Frolicking in the serious and profane, his work is at once poetic and interrogative. It will enliven collections of Australian Modern art, as well as all in need of inspiration.
