Throughout his career, Garry Shead chased his erotic Muse. Transformed into an icon and celebrated as a goddess, he sees in her the biographical, mystical and spiritual. For Shead, the Muse gives visual identity to inner reality. So vital did he believe inspiration was to a worthwhile life, he once quoted Dostoevsky, writing “The world will be saved by beauty.”
In this work she emerges as 'Salome', an infamous figure from Christianity. Salome entered popular culture through Oscar Wilde's play. Combining the taboos of murder, lust and sexual awakening with Biblical themes, the play both titillated and terrified audiences. In Shead's work, Salome is pictured in the throes of lost love. Opposed to censorship, Shead perceived stories like this as exhilarating lessons about eroticism, life and creativity.
Collected by all public institutions, Shead has won the Archibald and Dobell prizes. This work will enliven collections of iconic Australian art, as well as all in need of inspiration.
