In 1922 while travelling Australia with his wife, D.H. Lawrence wrote Kangaroo - a part biography, part Hamlet allegory about the Antipodean sensibility. In this work, Garry Shead reinterprets Kangaroo, uncovering links between his own life and Lawrence. The result fuses fiction, reality, myth, identity and humour.
In 'The League', Shead imagines an outback standoff surveyed by an ominous roo. Here, the real and fictitious ripple as an event is seized from the imagined yet somehow shared life of an artist and writer living seventy years apart. Like a short story, 'The League' pulls the viewer's attention in bold albeit curious strokes.
An edition of this work - which forms part of the artist's DH Lawrence series - is represented at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. Collected by all public institutions, Shead has won the Archibald and Dobell prizes. Frolicking in the serious and profane, his work is at once light-hearted and interrogative. It will enliven collections of Australian Modern art, as well as all who rejoice in a good story.
