Jeffrey Smart s ability to uncover poetry in the prosaic is vivid here in The Bicycle Race. Smart created it in 1966 three years after he painted the iconic Australian painting Cahill Expressway. This image is pure Smart: the enclosed urban landscape without a vestige of the natural world, the curved sweeping road and its geometric markings, the dissected street and advertising signs and the unidentified, lone figure all complete the stage for a human drama that will never unfold, forever frozen by Smart s enigmatic knack for stillness. The subtitle (Death of Morandi) refers to the death of the Italian artist Giorgio Morandi had died two years earlier. The obscured signage in the upper-right corner of the painting is Smart s oblique homage to this master of the still life whose retrospective was held in Bologna in the same year Smart created this image. Superbly reproduced, this print from the collection of the National Gallery of Australia epitomizes Jeffrey Smart at his best. Bold, graphic and urbane - The Bicycle Race promises to be enjoyed in your own space.
