Like his teacher Pietro Annigoni, Romano Stefanelli spent his artistic career reviving the Renaissance. Florence born, he was multidisciplinary - earning esteem for his paintings, sculptures, graphics and large scale frescos throughout Italy.

In ‘Stefano’, Stefanelli vividly recalls the Renaissance. His subject’s fixed gaze, clasped crucifix and drapery - reminiscent of a monk’s robes - reaches back to the Old Masters and suggests this work may have been a study for a fresco. Beyond this, ‘Stefano’ is also a lively image, touched by the artist’s knack for imitating life.

Further adding intrigue to this work is its glamorous provenance, the details of which will be revealed to its next custodian. For collectors of international art and admirers of the Renaissance, ‘Stefano’ is an exquisite find.
