Jacqui Stockdale, an esteemed artist from Kelly country (a.k.a Benalla) taught art in a prison for four years. Shortly after returning to Melbourne, she produced Familija - a series that shines stage lights on our uneasy convict origins. Revelling in the fantastical way we have remembered colonial Australia, her photographs - with a foot in the past and present, seem magical. In The Waiting Room works, two impassive women first appear as colonial characters, but are then disrobed to reveal contemporary tattoos. A lesson in what lies beneath, these works are equal parts beguiling and unorthodox. As Stockdale theatrically constructs her mise-en-scenes, we are reminded too of how history is constructed.
