Eric Thake 'Untitled [Cow]' - Collected by Josef

Dated 1967, this portrait of a cow by Eric Thake comes from the collection of revered scholar and curator, Ursula Hoff. Armed with an “uncommon view of common things,” Thake had the rare gift of seeing wonder invisible to most. In the humble cow, plonked in the paddock, he finds a line that rises and falls like ski slopes, an elegantly and formally captivating subject.

An official war artist and arguably Australia’s first surrealist painter, Thake is represented across public collections. He is known for his laconic eye and graphic flair. For collectors of modernist art and those interested in provenance, ‘Untitled [Cow]’ is a brilliant find.
