Brett Whiteley has been praised for reconfiguring Australian art’s relationship with the landscape. Despite living abroad in the sixties, Whiteley ultimately returned home. Speaking about this, he conceded Australia was his “breeding home, my stupidity, my cradle”. This feeling for the land beams through in ‘Marulan Bird with Rocks’. Having unhappily boarded in Bathurst as a schoolboy, Whiteley took solace in the landscape of country NSW. As an adult he returned, spending bright mornings painting works like this of Marulan, a small town in the Southern Tablelands. All flushed and comprised of curves, Whiteley saw the land through new eyes. This superb print derives from the work of art in the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
